Podcasts are becoming increasingly popular in the classroom. They provide an alternative to the whole class novel, and they support students to develop listening skills. There are some incredible curriculum tools to bring podcasts into the classroom. We recommend, Listenwise, an online library of podcasts and news stories that students can listen to. They also have a well-developed curriculum with quizzes and comprehension exercises. Here are five tips for how to effectively use and teach podcasts in your classroom. Find a podcast that is appropriate for student audiences Many simple Google searches can lead you to an engaging and appropriate podcast for your students based on their maturity levels and capabilities. For example, the “Serial” Podcast, Season 1, is perfect as a 3-4 week unit for students at the end of the school year as it intentionally describes a scenario for students that they have either experienced, could experience in their lifetime, or know of someone who has experienced what happened to one of the main focal people within the podcast. Student interest level should be the main priority for you as a curriculum/content enhancer while tying that interest to state/local district standards at the forefront of your planning. Intentionally plan for all-student success Within your selected podcast, treat each episode as a learning opportunity for all students. Align state/local district standards to the selected podcast and work backwards to determine what students should be able to know and do by the end of the learning session(s) and how will they illustrate their proficiency/knowledge (think formative/summative assessment!). Remember: we want all of our students to grow throughout this experience, so finding engaging activities for students to experience throughout each learning session is key. Don’t be overwhelmed in having to teach “every episode” If you are intentionally planning (see tip #2), you should have little difficulty with picking and choosing the most action-packed or important aspects of each episode within the podcast. Pre-work for teachers should include listening to the episodes that you will be teaching throughout the week and selecting time frames where you want to spend the majority of instruction. If there are places within each episode that are unnecessary to the understanding of the message / ideas, cut them out! Plan where you want to start and stop each episode to positively impact instruction and student learning. Review, Review, and Review some more! After each episode and before you begin a subsequent one, review content with your students and have a running document of important events, details, quotes, and conflicts/issues that are illustrated throughout each episode. This running document can be used as a modification to classroom instruction for struggling students or for absent students who may miss an episode. This document can be shared via Google Classroom and updated as each episode comes to a close and is a great way for students to add their own spin to illustrating important details and order of events… allow them to add to this document! Show them the importance of taking ownership of what they know and how they show what they know throughout this process. Creatively Assess Student Knowledge through Differentiated Assessments It is crucial to pre-plan any episode quiz, formative assessment, or unit (summative) assessment before the actual teaching of the podcast occurs. This will help you as a professional educator to instruct students on what they need to know and how they need to illustrate their knowledge. For example, for each episode, break up the types of formative assessments you craft for your students: journal entries, Quizizz/Kahoot games, “word bank” summaries, 10-word summaries, Image Illustrations - these are all great ways to assess student knowledge and will not bog students down with the same type of assessments. Create a summative assessment that may include topical/thematically-aligned research, “text”-dependent analysis questions, short-answer prompts, or constructed response essays. Classic Pen Co. Case In the past Classic Pen Company had been the low-cost producer of black and blue pens and had profit margins over 20% of sales. Over the last five years Pen Co. Sales Manager Dennis Selmor is just seeing the financial results and is not happy with the numbers. The first issue that Pen Co. is facing is their decline in profitability. Even though the numbers show the red and purple pens are more profitable individually (red 14. %, purple 18. 2%), the overall return on sales is declining (13. 5%). A second issue that Pen Co. has is the issue of addition of resource costs. It requires a substantial amount of time for physical changeover of production from one colour pen to another. Particularly changing from another colour to red. The final issue Pen Co. faces is the increase of costs related to scheduling and purchasing activities. Most of the indirect labour costs and computer system costs are related to scheduling and purchasing. Pen Company’s declining profitability could be based on the amount of the company’s overhead. They have determined overhead to be 300% of direct labour costs, when previously the overhead cost was only 200%. The make-up of this overhead is indirect labour, fringe benefits, computer systems, machinery, maintenance, and energy. The reason for such a large increase in overhead is because of the higher demand for indirect costs due to the addition of more complex and specialized products. While the cost for direct labour per one unit is the same for each colour of pen produced. The cost for indirect labour is made up of three different activities: 50% for handling production runs ($10,000), 40% for physical changeover or set up costs ($8,000), and 10% for maintaining records or parts administration ($2,000). The cost for computer systems is made up of two activities: 80% for production run activities ($8,000), and 20% for record keeping or parts administration ($2,000). Finally the remaining indirect costs are the machinery ($8,000), maintenance ($4,000), and energy ($2,000). These are all used to supply the machine with the capacity to produce the pens with a total of $14,000. Overall Classic Pen Co. must improve upon several areas of demand in order to increase its profitability similar to what it had been in the past. They need to increase their planning and try to adjust their current planning system and organizing. They could invest in more computers to increase the amount of scheduling being done by computers and as a result lower their indirect labour costs. Finally I recommend they should invest in some more machines to produce the different colour pens in. Biology, chemistry and geology are three of these branches. Each branch of science are very different. They use many of the same techniques in the study of the materials in their area of science, but are very different materials. Biology is the study of life and living things. The French naturalist, Jean Baptiste, introduced the term, biology, in Germany during the 1800's. Biology is also divided into branches. Zoology, botany and anatomy are three of the major branches. Biology studies the life of particular species and their behavior, development and history. What makes biology different from the other branches of science is that it studies living things. Chemistry is the branch of science dealing with the properties, composition and structure of substances and the changes they undergo when they combine or react under specific conditions. Chemistry deals mainly with components of material origin. Organic chemistry is the only branch of chemistry defined as the study of substances produced by living organisms. Physical chemistry is concerned with the physical properties of materials. Chemistry deals with the states of matter. Through experimentation a chemist defines a material by how it reacts under many different situations and how it reacts to other materials. From the earliest recorded times, humans have observed chemical changes and have speculated at their possible causes. By following the history of these observations and speculations the gradual evolution of the ideas and concepts that have led to the modern science of chemistry can be traced. In recent times, a great deal of research has been at the atomic and molecular levels . The study of their reactive characteristics has led to great advances in the use of the power of their reactions in the creation of nuclear power. Geology is the science of the Earth's history, composition and structure. Geological observations have been made since ancient times. The branches of geology are divided between the study of the Earth's landforms, petrology, geochemistry, geophysics, structural geology and paleontology. Geology encompasses the study of the Earth's landforms and it's surface features but is also concerned with the structure and inner parts of the planet. The focus of applied geology is to search for useful minerals, stable environments for human constructions and identify natural hazards. Oceanography is a branch that studies the ocean floor, mapping and measuring the Earth's surface and searching for clues to the origin of Earth. As you can see, these three branches of science are very different. They each involve the research of very different materials present here on Earth. They study living and non-living substances. The common thread is the science focused on the goal of finding and understanding these materials and how they can make life better for us. Scientists have searched for and studied various materials found on Earth. By studying the reactions in different environments, all branches of science have been able to develop the resources found on Earth to improve the status of living in society today. Each branch of science is focused on a grouping of materials that are very different in their characteristics, but the scientist's goals are very much the same.
