There are some incredible curriculum tools to bring podcasts into the classroom. We recommend, Listenwise, an online library of podcasts and news stories that students can listen to. They also have a well-developed curriculum with quizzes and comprehension exercises. Here are five tips for how to effectively use and teach podcasts in your classroom. Find a podcast that is appropriate for student audiences Many simple Google searches can lead you to an engaging and appropriate podcast for your students based on their maturity levels and capabilities. For example, the “Serial” Podcast, Season 1, is perfect as a 3-4 week unit for students at the end of the school year as it intentionally describes a scenario for students that they have either experienced, could experience in their lifetime, or know of someone who has experienced what happened to one of the main focal people within the podcast. Student interest level should be the main priority for you as a curriculum/content enhancer while tying that interest to state/local district standards at the forefront of your planning. Intentionally plan for all-student success Within your selected podcast, treat each episode as a learning opportunity for all students. Align state/local district standards to the selected podcast and work backwards to determine what students should be able to know and do by the end of the learning session(s) and how will they illustrate their proficiency/knowledge (think formative/summative assessment!). Remember: we want all of our students to grow throughout this experience, so finding engaging activities for students to experience throughout each learning session is key. This running document can be used as a modification to classroom instruction for struggling students or for absent students who may miss an episode. This document can be shared via Google Classroom and updated as each episode comes to a close and is a great way for students to add their own spin to illustrating important details and order of events… allow them to add to this document! Show them the importance of taking ownership of what they know and how they show what they know throughout this process. Creatively Assess Student Knowledge through Differentiated Assessments It is crucial to pre-plan any episode quiz, formative assessment, or unit (summative) assessment before the actual teaching of the podcast occurs. This will help you as a professional educator to instruct students on what they need to know and how they need to illustrate their knowledge. For example, for each episode, break up the types of formative assessments you craft for your students: journal entries, Quizizz/Kahoot games, “word bank” summaries, 10-word summaries, Image Illustrations - these are all great ways to assess student knowledge and will not bog students down with the same type of assessments. Create a summative assessment that may include topical/thematically-aligned research, “text”-dependent analysis questions, short-answer prompts, or constructed response essays. Biology, chemistry and geology are three of these branches. Each branch of science are very different. They use many of the same techniques in the study of the materials in their area of science, but are very different materials. Biology is the study of life and living things. The French naturalist, Jean Baptiste, introduced the term, biology, in Germany during the 1800's. Biology is also divided into branches. Zoology, botany and anatomy are three of the major branches. Biology studies the life of particular species and their behavior, development and history. What makes biology different from the other branches of science is that it studies living things. Chemistry is the branch of science dealing with the properties, composition and structure of substances and the changes they undergo when they combine or react under specific conditions. Chemistry deals mainly with components of material origin. Organic chemistry is the only branch of chemistry defined as the study of substances produced by living organisms. Physical chemistry is concerned with the physical properties of materials. Chemistry deals with the states of matter. Through experimentation a chemist defines a material by how it reacts under many different situations and how it reacts to other materials. From the earliest recorded times, humans have observed chemical changes and have speculated at their possible causes. By following the history of these observations and speculations the gradual evolution of the ideas and concepts that have led to the modern science of chemistry can be traced. In recent times, a great deal of research has been at the atomic and molecular levels . The study of their reactive characteristics has led to great advances in the use of the power of their reactions in the creation of nuclear power. Geology is the science of the Earth's history, composition and structure. Geological observations have been made since ancient times. The branches of geology are divided between the study of the Earth's landforms, petrology, geochemistry, geophysics, structural geology and paleontology. Geology encompasses the study of the Earth's landforms and it's surface features but is also concerned with the structure and inner parts of the planet. The focus of applied geology is to search for useful minerals, stable environments for human constructions and identify natural hazards. Oceanography is a branch that studies the ocean floor, mapping and measuring the Earth's surface and searching for clues to the origin of Earth. As you can see, these three branches of science are very different. They each involve the research of very different materials present here on Earth. They study living and non-living substances. The common thread is the science focused on the goal of finding and understanding these materials and how they can make life better for us. Scientists have searched for and studied various materials found on Earth. Knights of Labor Union Pioneered Labor Reforms The Knights of Labor was the first major American labor union. It was first formed in 1869 as a secret society of garment cutters in Philadelphia. The organization, under its full name, Noble and Holy Order of the Knights of Labor, grew throughout the 1870s, and by the mid-1880s it had a membership of more than 700,000. The union organized strikes and was able to secure negotiated settlements from hundreds of employers across the United States. Its eventual leader, Terence Vincent Powderly, was for a time the most famous labor leader in America. Under Powderlys leadership, the Knights of Labor transformed from its secretive roots to a much more prominent organization. The Haymarket Riot in Chicago on May 4, 1886, was blamed on the Knights of Labor, and the union was unfairly discredited in the eyes of the public. The American labor movement coalesced around a new organization, the American Federation of Labor, which was formed in December 1886. Membership of the Knights of Labor plummeted, and by the mid-1890s it had lost all its former influence and had less than 50,000 members. Origins of the Knights of Labor The Knights of Labor was organized at a meeting in Philadelphia on Thanksgiving Day, 1869. As some of the organizers had been members of fraternal organizations, the new union took on a number of trappings such as obscure rituals and a fixation on secrecy. The organization used the motto An injury to one is the concern of all. The union recruited workers in all fields, skilled and unskilled, which was an innovation.  Up to that point, labor organizations tended to focus on particularly skilled trades, thus leaving common workers with virtually no organized representation. The organization grew throughout the 1870s, and in 1882, under the influence of its new leader, Terence Vincent Powderly, an Irish Catholic machinist, the union did away with the rituals and ceased to be a secretive organization. Powderly had been active in local politics in Pennsylvania and had even served as the mayor of Scranton, Pennsylvania. With his grounding in practical politics, he was able to move the once-secretive organization into a growing movement. The membership nationwide grew to about 700,000 by 1886, though it plummeted after the suspected connection to the Haymarket Riot. By the 1890s Powderly was forced out as the organizations president, and the union lost most of its force. Powderly eventually wound up working for the federal government, working on immigration issues. In time the role of the Knights of Labor was essentially taken over by other organizations, most notably the newer American Federation of Labor. The legacy of the Knights of Labor is mixed. It ultimately failed to deliver on its early promise, however, it did prove that a nationwide labor organization could be practical. And by including unskilled workers in its membership, the Knights of Labor pioneered a widespread labor movement. The trick for the writer is to show how the hero’s behavior has changed, to demonstrate that the hero has been through a resurrection. The trick for the student of literature is to recognize that change. Resurrection Vogler describes the resurrection by way of sacred architecture, which, he says, aims to create the feeling of resurrection by confining worshipers in a dark narrow hall, like a birth canal, before bringing them out into an open well-lit area, with a corresponding lift of relief. During the resurrection, death and darkness are encountered one more time before being conquered for good. Danger is usually on the broadest scale of the entire story and the threat is to the entire world, not just the hero. The stakes are at their very highest. The hero, Vogler teaches, uses all lessons learned on the journey and is transformed into a new being with new insights. Heroes can receive assistance, but readers are most satisfied when the hero performs the decisive action herself, delivering the death blow to the shadow. This is especially important when the hero is a child or young adult. They absolutely must single-handedly win in the end, especially when an adult is the villain. The hero must be taken right to the edge of death, clearly fighting for her life, according to Vogler. The Climaxes Climaxes, nevertheless, need not be explosive. Vogler says some are like a gentle cresting of a wave of emotion. The hero may go through a climax of mental change that creates a physical climax, followed by a spiritual or emotional climax as the hero’s behavior and feelings change. He writes that a climax should provide a feeling of catharsis, a purifying emotional release. Psychologically, anxiety or depression are released by bringing unconscious material to the surface. The hero and the reader have reached the highest point of awareness, a peak experience of higher consciousness. Catharsis works best through a physical expression of emotions such as laughter or tears. This change in the hero is most satisfying when it happens in phases of growth. Writers often make the mistake of allowing the hero to change abruptly because of a single incident, but thats not the way real life happens. Dorothy’s resurrection is recovering from the apparent death of her hopes of returning home. Glinda explains that she had the power to return home all along, but she had to learn it for herself. Return With the Elixir Once the heros transformation is complete, he or she returns to the ordinary world with the elixir, a great treasure or a new understanding to share. This can be love, wisdom, freedom, or knowledge, Vogler writes. It doesnt have to be a tangible prize. Unless something is brought back from the ordeal in the inmost cave, an elixir, the hero is doomed to repeat the adventure. Love is one of the most powerful and popular of elixirs. A circle has been closed, bringing deep healing, wellness, and wholeness to the ordinary world, writes Vogler. Returning with the elixir means the hero can now implement change in his daily life and use the lessons of the adventure to heal his wounds. One of Voglers teachings is that a story is a weaving, and it must be finished properly or it will seem tangled. The return is where the writer resolves subplots and all questions raised in the story. She may raise new questions, but all old issues must be addressed. Subplots should have at least three scenes distributed throughout the story, one in each act. Each character should come away with some variety of elixir or learning. Vogler states the return is the last chance to touch the emotions of your reader. It must finish the story so that it satisfies or provokes your reader as intended. A good return unties the plot threads with a certain degree of surprise, a taste of unexpected or sudden revelation. The return is also the place for poetic justice. The villain’s sentence should directly relate to his sins and the hero’s reward be proportionate to the sacrifice offered. Dorothy says goodbye to her allies and wishes herself home. Back in the ordinary world, her perceptions of the people around her have changed. She declares she will never leave home again. This is not to be taken literally, Vogler writes. The house is the symbol of personality. Dorothy has found her own soul and has become a fully integrated person, in touch with both her positive qualities and her shadow. The elixir she brings back is her new idea of home and her new concept of her Self.
