Three Branches Of Science Three Branches of Science Andrew Rambo Ms. Gardener 10th Grade Biology September 11, 2000 Science is such a wide area that it is divided into branches. Biology, chemistry and geology are three of these branches. Each branch of science are very different. They use many of the same techniques in the study of the materials in their area of science, but are very different materials. Biology is the study of life and living things. The French naturalist, Jean Baptiste, introduced the term, biology, in Germany during the 1800's. Biology is also divided into branches. Zoology, botany and anatomy are three of the major branches. Biology studies the life of particular species and their behavior, development and history. What makes biology different from the other branches of science is that it studies living things. Chemistry is the branch of science dealing with the properties, composition and structure of substances and the changes they undergo when they combine or react under specific conditions. Chemistry deals mainly with components of material origin. Organic chemistry is the only branch of chemistry defined as the study of substances produced by living organisms. Physical chemistry is concerned with the physical properties of materials. Chemistry deals with the states of matter. Through experimentation a chemist defines a material by how it reacts under many different situations and how it reacts to other materials. From the earliest recorded times, humans have observed chemical changes and have speculated at their possible causes. By following the history of these observations and speculations the gradual evolution of the ideas and concepts that have led to the modern science of chemistry can be traced. In recent times, a great deal of research has been at the atomic and molecular levels . The study of their reactive characteristics has led to great advances in the use of the power of their reactions in the creation of nuclear power. Geology is the science of the Earth's history, composition and structure. Geological observations have been made since ancient times. The branches of geology are divided between the study of the Earth's landforms, petrology, geochemistry, geophysics, structural geology and paleontology. Geology encompasses the study of the Earth's landforms and it's surface features but is also concerned with the structure and inner parts of the planet. The focus of applied geology is to search for useful minerals, stable environments for human constructions and identify natural hazards. Oceanography is a branch that studies the ocean floor, mapping and measuring the Earth's surface and searching for clues to the origin of Earth. As you can see, these three branches of science are very different. They each involve the research of very different materials present here on Earth. They study living and non-living substances. The common thread is the science focused on the goal of finding and understanding these materials and how they can make life better for us. Scientists have searched for and studied various materials found on Earth. By studying the reactions in different environments, all branches of science have been able to develop the resources found on Earth to improve the status of living in society today. Each branch of science is focused on a grouping of materials that are very different in their characteristics, but the scientist's goals are very much the same. Just as people are said to live on through their children, a star also lives on in the form of a Black Hole. A Black Hole is created when a star dies. Te inward gravitational pull of the star becomes so great that it collapses into itself and turns into a void with zero mass. This void is called a Black Hole. A Black Hole is not a giant vacuum. Rather, it is an object of infinite density and gravity that bends the space and time around it. Time moves more slowly the closer it gets to the center. On the very edge of the event horizon, time actually stops! Black holes are not all alike. In fact, we now know of three distinct kinds of black holes; Supermassive, Mid-mass, and Stellar. Very little is known about Mid-mass Black Holes. However, there is an abundance of information on Supermassive and Stellar Black Holes. Supermassive Black Holes lie at the center of most galaxies. These Black Holes have masses of millions of suns and produce huge amounts of energy. Scientists are not sure how these Supermassive Black Holes form, but they have come up with two possible theories. Knights of Labor Union Pioneered Labor Reforms The Knights of Labor was the first major American labor union. It was first formed in 1869 as a secret society of garment cutters in Philadelphia. The organization, under its full name, Noble and Holy Order of the Knights of Labor, grew throughout the 1870s, and by the mid-1880s it had a membership of more than 700,000. The union organized strikes and was able to secure negotiated settlements from hundreds of employers across the United States. Its eventual leader, Terence Vincent Powderly, was for a time the most famous labor leader in America. Under Powderlys leadership, the Knights of Labor transformed from its secretive roots to a much more prominent organization. The Haymarket Riot in Chicago on May 4, 1886, was blamed on the Knights of Labor, and the union was unfairly discredited in the eyes of the public. The American labor movement coalesced around a new organization, the American Federation of Labor, which was formed in December 1886. Membership of the Knights of Labor plummeted, and by the mid-1890s it had lost all its former influence and had less than 50,000 members. Origins of the Knights of Labor The Knights of Labor was organized at a meeting in Philadelphia on Thanksgiving Day, 1869. As some of the organizers had been members of fraternal organizations, the new union took on a number of trappings such as obscure rituals and a fixation on secrecy. The organization used the motto An injury to one is the concern of all. The union recruited workers in all fields, skilled and unskilled, which was an innovation.Ã Up to that point, labor organizations tended to focus on particularly skilled trades, thus leaving common workers with virtually no organized representation. The organization grew throughout the 1870s, and in 1882, under the influence of its new leader, Terence Vincent Powderly, an Irish Catholic machinist, the union did away with the rituals and ceased to be a secretive organization. Powderly had been active in local politics in Pennsylvania and had even served as the mayor of Scranton, Pennsylvania. With his grounding in practical politics, he was able to move the once-secretive organization into a growing movement. The membership nationwide grew to about 700,000 by 1886, though it plummeted after the suspected connection to the Haymarket Riot. By the 1890s Powderly was forced out as the organizations president, and the union lost most of its force. Powderly eventually wound up working for the federal government, working on immigration issues. In time the role of the Knights of Labor was essentially taken over by other organizations, most notably the newer American Federation of Labor. The legacy of the Knights of Labor is mixed. It ultimately failed to deliver on its early promise, however, it did prove that a nationwide labor organization could be practical. And by including unskilled workers in its membership, the Knights of Labor pioneered a widespread labor movement. Later labor activists were inspired by the egalitarian nature of the Knights of Labor while also learning from the organizations mistakes.

Asked about this, the interviewee says that thee team does not communicate in the field only but the members also talk off field to bridge the gap in their communications. She also claims that they do their planning during practices which often happen two to three times a week. Moreover, they do immediate planning during games and half-time breaks or whenever there are substitutes in the game. They do the talking and planning throughout the game because as it is observ ed in soccer games, there may be changes that might affect what could have been planned before the game or accidents that may cause change in plans. The third characteristic mentioned by Swales is, ââ¬Å"A discourse community uses its participatory mechanisms primarily to provide information and feedbackâ⬠(472). Lewis influenced peop le first by being open and honest, and second by putting herself in the shoes of her employees. When the time for change came, they were ready to go along with her because they trusted her commitment to them and the company.Jeanne Lewis did not try to propose significant organizational change as soon as she had the idea. (p. 2) Influencing an organization by ethical means takes more time than doing it unethically. It is a process of gaining trust similar to that in any relationship. Jeanne Lewis influenced her organization ethically by gaining the knowledge to know how her changes would affect others, remaining open to suggestion and gaining trust.
